5×16: “Conquer”

Conventional wisdom would suggest that, as a genre show, there’s a ceiling in terms of how good a show like The Walking Dead could ever be. Even though The Walking Dead explores elements of the human condition like most all art and fiction, a show with zombies in its central premise is, rightly or not, almost always going to be pigeon holed. It could be considered a great horror show or a great action show, it can be recognized for its makeup or effects, but the fact is that, regardless of its quality, most would never include it in the same conversation as its upper-class AMC brethren like Breaking Bad or Mad Men. I’m not going to put The Walking Dead in that same class either, but I will say, unlike those shows, that I didn’t give up on it in the middle, and after this season’s conclusion, I’m glad I didn’t. If you haven’t seen Divergent, you’d better check out my review or you’ll be just as confused as Fiancé was when I dragged him along. If you haven’t seen it but are in a particularly stubborn mood, go ahead and read, but don’t get mad at me when you don’t understand stuff. If you have seen it, fabulous; you have my blessing to read. If you’re getting peeved at this disclaimer, just shut up and read already.

Insurgent picks up a short time after the events of Divergent. Tris, Tobias, Caleb, and Peter have found refuge with the Amity faction, which disintegrates pretty quickly once Eric finds them and Peter betrays their presence. Tris, Tobias, and Caleb run into a group of factionless aboard a supply train, and Tris discovers that Tobias is the son of Evelyn Eaton, presumed dead but very much alive and the leader of the factionless.

6×03: “Basic Crisis Room Decorum”

One thing I’ve noticed about many of the truly great television comedies is how much more I enjoyed them earlier in their runs. The first couple of seasons may not be what a lot of shows are best remembered for, but what they usually represent is an earnest attempt on the part of their writers to stick to some sort of recognizable reality. While we’re not necessarily here to discuss shows like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Community, like that show, has gone from relatively grounded and clever to a show that will often sacrifice everyone’s sanity for increasingly cheap laugh. It’s a progression that’s worked well for both shows in some ways, even if it’s cost Community the ability to pick up new viewers as it’s progressed, but sometimes I really miss watching a show about people and places that could actually exist in real life. I have always believed that if we are good and kind and brave, we’ll be rewarded for it. That’s why (even if I’m not always successful at it) I always try to do what I can for others, and I feel bad when my good intentions don’t amount to very much.

That’s a pretty common truth. Sometimes, no matter how well-meaning our intentions are, it’s still possible to let others down because of some deep flaw in ourselves, whether it’s as innocuous as time management or as nefarious as self-sabotage because we don’t really believe we’re worthy of being rewarded.

But sometimes, perhaps more frequently than we might like to admit, we let others down because their expectations of us are too high. And yet we keep striving, keep aiming for that impossible approval, keep on trying to be good and kind and respectful in spite of the obstacles placed in front of us, whether by everyday life or by the very people we’re trying to help.

Because still we desperately hope, way down in the deepest parts of us, that no matter how hard life gets or how much it gets us down, we’ll be rewarded for our efforts.

5×15: “Try”

So things look bad right now for Rick and co.  Sasha’s got some kind of survivor’s guilt going on.  No matter who Deanna believes, Glenn or Nicholas, her son’s still dead and she’s not okay with to that.  And Rick, well Rick really could’ve handled his whole side of things a lot more diplomatically.

The big news this week is that everything’s falling apart. After four episodes of building Alexandria up as the safe zone our heroes need, yet another of our group has died, and Rick’s carnal desires may cost them everything. We finally get the confrontation we’ve been waiting all of two to three episodes for (even though it feels like forever) and Rick takes it to Pete in a way that’s actually pretty disappointing. Why I’m watching… Community season 6

I don’t know if its the playback errors, the lousy buffering, the lack of a consistent HD signal, the need to use a geo-relocating VPN, the mobile app that’s not available in Canada, or the pause screens that made it impossible to take a good screen cap, but there was definitely something off about this season’s Community debut. I know beggars can’t be choosers, but Yahoo Screen really sucks even outside of the whole “We don’t care about Canadians” aspect of Yahoo’s distribution system.  Look, all I’m really saying is that there’s a reason I spent $30 on my computer speakers and $2400 on my home theatre speakers, and it’s not just so I could make myself feel like a big man when I tell people how much I spent on my home theatre system.  I just don’t like having to sit upright, stare at a tiny video window in a web browser, and use a service that tricks the servers into thinking I’m pinging from a different country when I’m just trying to watch a TV show (plus I got a pretty big discount on said speakers).

5×14: “Spend”

Just when you think everyone’s safe… they go and kill the guy nobody really cares too much about! A lot of things happened in “Spend” and there’s a lot to unpack, so I’ll try not to go off on too many irrelevant tangents. Like I normally do.

“Spend” opens with a measure of hope and a look towards the future with Noah speaking to Reg, Deanna’s husband, about learning architecture (okay, so it literally opens with a small character moment for Father Gabriel, but I hate that guy and will address him later). So far most of the learned skills in our group have centred much more around hunter-gatherer tasks, so it’s refreshing to see one of our heroes learning something that’s still important, but not quite as directly practical as insert knife here. A documentary about the Oprah of ineffectual white people

I don’t know if there’s a better way to garner no website traffic than to write / about a documentary / about a podcast / by the creator / of a low-rated sitcom / cancelled by NBC / with a new season available exclusively online / on a streaming service no one’s heard of / owned by Yahoo. But here it goes anyways:

If you know of him at all, you probably know Dan Harmon from his critically lauded, much-maligned and poorly Nielsen-rated television show, Community (if you know of that show at all… which you should). It was his time as series creator, executive producer and showrunner for much of that show’s run that Harmon gained fame and notoriety, the show and its creator growing a ferociously dedicated (but small) fan base. Co-workers, be they directors, writers or actors, have also been fiercely loyal to the man. Well, except for Chevy Chase.
