What You Should See
I’m not sure if it’s ironic or just deeply weird that so many movies about true-life stories are debuting on the same weekend that the biggest new release is a cartoon transposed into real-life imagery via computer animation, but regardless, it’s documentary madness this weekend, with no less than five of the eight new movies being documentaries! And, actually, every one of them — Maiden, Marianne and Leonard: Words of Love, Echo in the Canyon, There Are No Fakes, and Picture a Farmer — looks pretty good too!
We’ve also got some very intriguing-looking smaller-screen movies opening this weekend too, including the racially charged The Last Black Man in San Francisco playing at the Princess and the batsh*t crazy-looking Diamantino playing at Metro Cinema.
That only leaves the new live-action-looking-but-still-all-computer-animated all-new Lion King to consider, and while it will no doubt be the weekend’s big money maker, the reviews aren’t exactly doing it much in the way of favours. And considering I’m one of the few people in the civilized world who’s never seen the original, I don’t think I’ll be seeing this one anytime soon either. Or maybe that makes me one of the few people in the civilized world who’s uniquely qualified to see it. Ah, but I probably won’t anyway.
