What You Should See

So let’s be clear here for a second.  If you’ve just looked at the list of new movies this week [above], it looks like you’ve got a lot of choices.  But the only major new release this weekend is Winchester.  And you shouldn’t see that.  Every other movie in the list though?  Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool?  Looks solid and comes with some considerable acclaim.  Living Proof?  Probably worth your time.  Unarmed Verses, Ava, Our People Will be Healed, and Luk’ Luk’I?  All strong works that could easily be overlooked but shouldn’t.  But my vote for movie you should see this weekend goes to The Other Side of Hope.  It looks good and funny and grim and dark, and maybe most importantly, it reminds me of that made up movie from Seinfeld, The Other Side of Darkness.

The other great movie-related thing you may want to do this weekend is go to the Flashback Film Fest at Scotiabank Theatre.  Sure, that would mean the horrendous cost of driving to West Edmonton Mall, finding parking, and braving the often-horrible crowds of people there and people who won’t shut up while the movie’s playing, but how else can you catch such classics as Back to the Future , Shaun of the Dead, or The Big Lebowski in a theatre?  Start your own theatre?  In your tree house?  And get your little friends to come?  I’d like to see that!
