What You Should See

Oh man, is this ever the motherload January weekend.  It’s so the opposite of “F**ck You, It’s January!” that I’m going to soften my language (however temporarily), think good thoughts (definitely temporarily), and say “Have a Great Day, It’s January!”  What a great way to end the month!  We’ve got a couple of really strong new releases in Call Me By Your Name and Mary and the Witch’s Flower, the former a touching love story and the latter a Ghibli-esque anime movie from the newly formed Studio Ponoc, and we’re highly recommending both.

As if that weren’t enough, we’re also in the midst of TIFF’s Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival tour, with several new independent movies showing at Metro Cinema.  This weekend’s showings include Adventures in Public School, Rumble:  The Indians Who Rocked the World, Les Affamés (The Ravenous), Never Steady, Never Still, and My Friend Dahmer.  And I, honestly, have time for every one of them (though not literally; I have, like, homework and stuff).

Really, it’s a great, great weekend for new movies the likes of which we rarely see in January, and it’s enough to make you think just a little bit better of Hollywood and even the world around us—oh wait.  Oh wait, the major new release is Maze Runner:  The Death Cure.  Oh, that really screws things up, doesn’t it?  Well… we’ll just ignore that one.
