What You Should See

Okay.  Okay.  So.  So honestly?  Honestly?  I wouldn’t see anything new this weekend.  We’ve got two very blah-looking movies in 12 Strong and Den of Thieves, and I wouldn’t see either, Hostiles, a very decent-looking movie that I have no real interest in, the Daniel-Day-Lewis led Phantom Thread, which, despite critical acclaim, falls firmly on the side of movies I just don’t want to see, and Forever My Girl, which, again with the theme of honesty, I’ll admit that I never bothered to learn anything about it after I saw its poster and Rotten Tomatoes score.  Collectively these movies don’t exactly scream “F**k You, It’s January!”, but… bleh.  Meh.  Snuh.

If we’re going a little bit more with the theme of fairness though, I have to admit that all three of Metro Cinema’s new releases for the weekend look somewhat more encouraging.  Unlike all five of the week’s big new releases, all three of these smaller pieces has something to go see.  Mountain looks like a masterful combination of powerful sights and wonderful sounds with narration from Willem Dafoe (!), The Final Year tells of the last year of our lives before we entered the darkest timeline (a.k.a., Donald Trump’s Presidency), and The Stairs also looks pretty good.  But let’s be honest, which is after all what we’ve been going for this entire time, none of those are quite enough to get me to get off the couch this weekend.
