Roads! When we are, why do we still need roads?!

The date is October 24 and the year is 2015 — three days after Marty McFly and Doctor Emmett Brown arrived in their future (our present) to prevent Marty McFly, Jr.’s arrest. In the process, they unwittingly set forward a series of events that would alter our past (their present), resulting in a ruined 1985 where Biff Tannen became one of the richest men in America who used his newfound economic power to influence the political and socio-economic climate of the country for the worse, resulting in widespread crime, corruption, prostitution, and gang warfare. In order to prevent this dark timeline from happening, McFly and Brown engaged in further unsanctioned time travelling to fix their present-day 1985 and set history back on its correct course. But did they really succeed or did they, in fact, set humanity — all of us — back by engaging in these chronal machinations. Continue reading →

6×02: “JSS”

So four important things are happening this week here in Edmonton, Canada. First, it’s time to get out and vote in the Canadian federal election on Monday, second, the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer also debuts on Monday (an event that’s important for the world), third, it’s Back to the Future day on Wednesday (and, lest we forget, Michael J. Fox was born here in Edmonton), and fourth, this week we can talk about one of if not the best episodes of The Walking Dead. Guess which one of those four things I’m probably going to skip. Hint: you’re reading about the last one right now, the second can be watched from home in less than five minutes while lying on the couch, and the third is one of my favourite movies of all time. Oh, and spoilers, “JSS” is one of if not the best episodes of The Walking Dead ever, ever. Continue reading →

Why I’m watching… The Walking Dead season 6

by Thom Yee

walking-dead-season-6-headIf I’m right, and I usually am when it comes to prognosticating on a TV show that I’ve already read well ahead of in its counterpart/inspiration comicbook series, then this might be the last season of The Walking Dead that’s… like… this. Alexandria may have been a big shift for Rick and co., offering the first real, lasting, modern-living respite our heroes have ever had, but if our heroes wind up staying here on the TV show as long they do in the comic, then we’ve only begun to see where this story is headed. In addition to the internal strife that will probably be forming between Rick and Morgan this season, it looks like we’re also on a collision course with the mysterious Wolves that have been skulking around the edges of this show all last season, something that may lead to our first confrontation with the biggest big bad in the entire series. Think the Governor, only bigger, meaner, with no sense of morality, and directly responsible for the brutal, sadistic beating to death of a beloved long-time character. Continue reading →

It’s just botany, not rocket science

by Thom Yee

“When Ben and I first came on the scene there were rumours that we were gay because it was two guys who wrote a script together. It’s just like any piece of gossip… and it put us in a weird position of having to answer, you know what I mean? Which was then really deeply offensive.

“I don’t want to, like [imply] it’s some sort of disease – then it’s like I’m throwing my friends under the bus. But at the time, I remember thinking and saying, Rupert Everett was openly gay and this guy – more handsome than anybody, a classically trained actor – it’s tough to make the argument that he didn’t take a hit for being out.

“I think it must be really hard for actors to be out publicly. But in terms of actors, I think you’re a better actor the less people know about you, period. And sexuality is a huge part of that. Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play.” Continue reading →

1×06: “The Good Man”

So they let them out.

This is the final episode of the season and the one where our heroes try to save their three taken loved ones — Nick, Liza, and Griselda — by committing the slow, shambling, long-term, horrific genocide of the remaining L.A. residents. We knew that the arena full of crashing-at-the-gates, yearning-to-be-free-and-eat-brains zombies were most likely going to be some sort of trump card for one group or another, but it’s disappointing (if not predictable) to see our heroes responsible for the overrunning of L.A. by zombies, our heroes packing up and running away without telling anyone, our heroes basically killing a bunch of innocent people to achieve their own ends. Their evils weren’t direct, they didn’t set out to bring about the apocalypse, but in releasing that crashing, brain-eating zombie horde to distract the military and get Nick, Liza, and Griselda back, they were responsible for the killing of L.A. They didn’t even close the gates of their community behind them when they left. Continue reading →

1×05: “Cobalt”

It may not be the best example of our own humanity when we react positively to death on a show we watch week after week, but when we cheer for the deaths of certain characters, some entirely innocent, does that actually make us bad people?

In this week’s episode of Fear the Walking Dead, entitled “Cobalt”, we finally learn the meaning of that mysterious term, the military’s plan for self-extraction and abandonment (and possibly extermination) of its civilian charges.  And it’s happening soon. Except delete the word ‘finally’, because there have been no seeds for cobalt planted thus far, and that’s the type of lack of forethought that’s really hurt the show in these late stages. I’m not sure I fully understand why people like Batman so much, because I don’t think the Batman most people like is the same Batman that I like. My Batman is less a [Bat]man but a [Bat]god, the ultimate human, the first human superhero, and the kind of hero that never once makes you question his value among a pantheon of god-like superbeings. The kind of superhero that can bring down an alien overman. The kind of superhero so resilent that he’s endured the campiest of the ‘60s and the darkest of the ‘80s. The kind of superhero who can defeat three Martians at once and on his own, Martians that had beaten the entire Justice League, by being the first to discover their one weakness. He’s there because he’s the Dark Knight Detective, the smartest one in the room even when that room contains people who were gifted with intelligence as a superpowers.

1×04: “Not Fade Away”

We’ve still got two episodes to go, and we really only have four episodes to judge it on, but I feel like I can say with confidence that I like Fear the Walking Dead better than its parent show so far. The Walking Dead may be, by and large, an easy show to like for pretty obvious reasons, but it’s also been pretty grating if not mind-numbing to understand some of its characters, the choices they make, and the resulting prolonged dramas they’ve caused, and that’s led to a lot of really stupid things happening with alarming frequency and some unnecessary character assassinations like what happened with Andrea becoming an unlikable, shrill turnoff before her welcome demise. In Fear, even if you don’t like a character, at least it’s not hard to understand where they’re coming from, and I don’t particularly want to see anyone die just yet. Continue reading →
