What You Should See

When they look back at the summer of 2019 at the movies, this will probably be the weekend that didn’t matter that much.  Because Spider-Man:  Far From Home opens next Tuesday.

That’s just what you get around this time of the summer, pre-dog days and in the midst of North America’s greatest moments of nationalism, the firsts and fourths of July.  That’s why Spider-Man’s opening next Tuesday instead of next Friday, that’s why Midsommar, a pretty tight-looking horror movie, opens the day after on Wednesday, it may even have something to do with why Annabelle Comes Home opened two days ago.

That brings us to what’s actually new for this weekend, Annabelle Comes Home, even if it’s not opening today, and Yesterday, which looks like all kinds of cute if not must see.  It does have that theft-of-intellectual-property concept that I think we’ve all fantasized about, though, that schism in reality of what if we could somehow secretly steal proven, successful ideas and migrate them into a world that hasn’t seen them yet, so it is something I want to see someday.  Also showing in limited release is And the Oscar Goes To…, showing at South Edmonton Common, a Malayalam movie I don’t quite know what to make of mostly because I had no idea it existed until just now.  It looks kind of cute too.  In fact, I guess it’s a cute new movie weekend all around.

Except that that doll in Annabelle is trying to kill everyone.
