What You Should See

I don’t wanna sound cynical or anything, but… I knew The Hitman’s Bodyguard wasn’t going to be a good movie after seeing only the first few seconds of its first trailer back in mid-May.  And I also don’t wanna, conversely, sound too hopeful when I say that I knew Logan Lucky, the week’s other major new release, was going to be a pretty good movie after watching its first trailer back in late May.  What I will say, though, is that I don’t really care that much about either of them, and after the letdown that most of this August has been for movies, I would wager to say that neither of these two movies is likely to move your movie excitement needle too far into the positive.  Also, I’m not totally convinced I used “conversely” right, but I went for it anyway.

One weird thing this weekend is that all three of the other, smaller new releases — Wind River, The Neighborhood, and Menashe (all of which look reasonably decent but also very hard to be excited about) — can only be seen at the downtown Landmark theatre, but if you want to see Logan Lucky, the only new release I’d really recommend, you’re gonna have to go somewhere else, ‘cause that’s the one new movie not playing there.  So if you were holding out hope to see all five new releases in one single theatre, it’s not happening.

Of course, you could alternatively go to The Fringe, an event that’s been pretty popular in this city for a while (though I personally can’t stand the idea of theatre that’s not remote and high-financed rather than live and local), you should check out and/or binge Marvel’s The Defenders, also debuting this Friday on Netflix, and if you want to see a proven good movie, maybe check out Cineplex’s “30 Days of Summer” event.  Might I suggest The Dark Knight?
