What You Should See

You really have to give the producers of movies like Going in Style credit sometimes.  Even though they failed to put together a good movie, at least they picked a good time to release it, when there are big gaps between major releases and when nothing similar is showing, and because of that, it’s stayed in the Top 5 weekend releases for much longer than it should have (I didn’t even have it in our Top 5 predictions in its first weekend of release).   That’s probably what the Unforgettable producers were thinking too, but, luckily for all of us (i.e., luckily for humanity), very few people fell for seeing that movie last weekend.

Anyway, if you’re really angling to see something new this weekend, before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 officially starts the summer movie season next Friday, then you should probably skip this weekend’s biggest new release, The Circle, and head straight for Colossal, the movie about Kaijus who follow Anne Hathaway’s dance moves.  In fact, I can’t think of a single reason why you would ever not see (nazi?) a movie where Kaijus dance like Anne Hathaway.

In other, smaller new releases, I Called Him Morgan looks like an obvious winner for jazz fans (whoever they are), and two foreign movies are opening this weekend too, China’s Battle of Memories, which, as of right now, is a complete blank spot in terms of reviews but sounds intriguing (something to do with copying memories and divorce and serial killers?), and India’s Baahubali 2:  The Conclusion, which is apparently going to be a really big deal in international markets but is a little bit hard for me to recommend because it rarely makes sense to start with the conclusion (unless you’re writing a mystery novel).
