What You Should See
You’re asking me what to see this weekend? Get Out! But seriously, Get Out is actually the only major new movie debuting this weekend, so unless you still haven’t seen The LEGO Batman Movie or John Wick 2: Chapter 2, Get Out is your only brand new choice. It also looks sort of amazing and maybe exactly the kind of movie we need right now, so seeing it could be the movie-going equivalent of appointing H.R. McMaster to National Security Advisor — for once a choice that actually makes some sense.
But just because there’s only one major new movie release doesn’t mean there’s nothing else new to see and support this weekend, including Sharkwater: A Tribute to Rob Stewart and I Am Not Your Negro, Aademy-Award-nominated movies like A Man Called Ove (which is probably going to be my pick this weekend), and/or you could attend rescreenings of Best Picture Oscar nominees Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea at Metro Cinema (before watching them lose to La La Land this weekend [our review will be up tomorrow]). Speaking of the Oscars, Metro Cinema will also be holding a live Oscars viewing event on Sunday, so if your movie-going habits don’t lean too heavily into the lonely, the solitary, or the agoraphobic, that might be fun.
Like last week though, the one thing I’ll say you absolutely have to do is watch Blind Vaysha before the weekend is over. Why? Because it’s Canadian, it’s Academy Award nominated, you can see it from home, it’s only eight minutes, and it’s free to watch until Sunday night. Seriously! You could watch it right now just by hitting that link! Or this link! Or over here!
