What You Should See
Well, it took all month, but finally, “F*ck you, it’s January!” Unfortunately, all three of this week’s major releases — Gold, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, and A Dog’s Purpose — are looking like that special combination of complete wastes of time and actively annoying to watch, but if you’re desperate to go see a brand-new Hollywood production… I don’t know, maybe Gold. At least the trailer looked decent, making seeing Gold this weekend the moviegoing equivalent of appointing David Shulkin Secretary of Veterans Affairs — it should’ve been a safe choice, but it’s hard to feel upbeat about anything right now.
Meanwhile, Julieta seems easy enough to recommend, after all, it’s the new Spanish film from Pedro Almodóvar, but at the same time… it’s the new Spanish film from Pedro Almodovar. I doubt all of you really know what that even means. Ditto the new Yu-Gi-Oh! movie, The Dark Side of Dimensions, which surprises me is still a thing, but I guess you’ll know better than I if you should see it or not.
In fact, the only interesting thing happening with new movies, and it’s been going on all month actually (where have we been?) is Tiff’s Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival at Metro Cinema. This weekend they’re showing Nelly, Werewolf, and Window Horses and all three actually look really good, but they’re one day only, so see them while they’re hot! Especially Nelly, that movie has nudity right in the trailer (above)! So I guess all of this was really just a long way of saying go see Nelly.
