 What You Should See

There’s really two stories going on this weekend in new movies. The first is the same story we always have, with major movie openings that look good (Deepwater Horizon and Queen of Katwe), others that look bad (Masterminds), and some that just look unusual (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children), and, honestly, there’s enough reason to see three out of four of them. Maybe that’s understating it a little even, because Queen of Katwe might be amazing, Deepwater Horizon looks way better than it should’ve been (plus Kurt Russell’s in it!), and who doesn’t want to see a Tim Burton version of the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters (other than maybe anyone who’s seen Tim Burton’s last bunch of movies).  Gleason and The Innocents also look really good too, and actually, that’s five out of six new movies I’d recommend seeing, so that’s pretty special.

The other story and what’s way more special, though, is that this week is the start of the Edmonton International Film Festival, and there are a ton of movies playing, way too many to list here. Here’s the full schedule. If you’ve ever wanted to immerse yourself in movies for days on end, pick up an Event Pass and go nuts. I mean, with our economy, it’s not like you have better things (like work) to do anyway.
