What You Should See

Star Trek Beyond. Now I know it’s an almost two month old movie by now, but hear me out for a second. First, it’s Star Trek’s 50th anniversary, and as much as I don’t have much personally invested in the franchise, that’s an important milestone. Second, the rebooted Star Trek movies are great and Beyond may be the best of them. Third, Star Trek Beyond hasn’t done anywhere near the business it should have in its theatrical run, especially given that it was one of the few movies this summer that was actually trying to be good, so go see it ya stingy bastards!

If you still want to see another movie after seeing Star Trek Beyond , this week’s new major releases — Sully, When the Bough Breaks, and The Wild Life — are all the types of movies that already have their own built in audiences, so I won’t waste any more time talking about them. Also, A Tale of Love and Darkness marks Natalie Portman’s directorial debut, so that’s… kind of interesting… I guess…?

But the movies you should really be thinking about seeing this weekend are April and the Extraordinary World and Tickled, because they’re the only new movies this weekend that stand a real chance of sticking with you. After you see Star Trek Beyond that is.
