What You Should See

It’s one of those weird weekends where all of the best movies are playing at the independent theatres and none of the big-budget summer movie openings are really worth recommending. Actually, that’s probably usually the case, it’s just that this time, all of the independent movie openings have enough mainstream appeal to easily recommend to almost anyone. A Bigger Splash, playing at the Princess, looks decent and has gotten good reviews (plus, Tilda Swinton!), High-Rise looks very intriguing (and stars Tom Hiddleston!), and The Boy and the Beast looks like a nicely heartwarming piece (and it’s anime).

As for those big releases, I don’t think anyone who cares was ever under the impression that Alice Through the Looking Glass was going to be a good movie, and that’s how it turned out, but X-Men: Apocalypse? After rehabbing the X-Men brand?  After the best X-Men movie of all time?  After the surprise, R-rated box office smash that was Deadpool? Apocalypse couldn’t possibly bad, right? Wrong. We’re still advocates of judging for yourself, and our review’ll be up soon, but for now, it’s not looking good.
