What You Should See

People like to make the argument that you can’t expect much from movies based on games or toys or whatever other novelty, and I always like to make the argument back that only d*cks more interested in saying reductive things and dismissing everything around them rather than giving things a chance and recognizing the potential inherent in all human endeavour say those kinds of things. That said, it really doesn’t matter and probably never will matter if you see The Angry Birds Movie. Do, don’t, come close, or stay away, it’ll probably do better than we expect and then peter its way through increasingly irrelevant sequels. And you won’t be any different from watching it.

It’s also kind of that way with Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, likely to be the second biggest new release of the weekend. Again, see it or don’t, it’s not that great, it’s not too bad, it’s just not going to matter that much. On the other hand, movie nerds like we here at GOO Reviews have virtually been frothing at the mouth with every new trailer release of The Nice Guys, a ‘70s-looking detective thriller starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe and written and directed by Shane Black. It’s that last bit about who’s directing the movie that’s most important, and if you missed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Black’s last movie before directing Iron Man 3, now’s your chance to see a movie that kind of just shows you why we like movies.
