What You Should See

For a mid-January still very much mired in the post-Force Awakens afterglow, this is a surprisingly strong weekend for movies in Edmonton — at least if you ignore the big new releases. Ride Along 2 and Norm of the North… well, they are what they are and because of that they will have their audiences. Right now, Ride Along 2 is looking like it’ll take the number one spot, which is a shame because it and its predecessor are the directorial works of the man who ruined the Fantastic Four movie franchise by making the first two, two movies that even make last year’s FF effort look competent. And that’s something that should never be forgiven. Michael Bay’s 13 Hours is looking surprisingly un-Michael-Bay-ish, but he’s another director whose past franchise works can’t be forgiven, so I can’t rightly recommend that movie either.

What’s interesting about this weekend is the sheer amount of Oscar-contending movies you can see in the space of a few days, including The Revenant, The Big Short, The Martian, Spotlight, Brooklyn, and Bridge of Spies.

But what’s really interesting is Victoria, playing at the Garneau. Just watch the trailer above and tell me you don’t want to see that movie at least a little. I mean, one take! One take!
