What You Should See

When I saw Room was opening this weekend, I just about lost my sh*t! The story of a young kidnapped woman and the five-year-old son she gave birth to while in captivity, it’s… probably not a movie many of you will see, but you should because it’s rare for good independent movies like Room to open here in Edmonton on the same day as their national American release.

But that’s really burying the lead because Spectre! Spectre! Finally we can wake up from the doldrums of the September to October not-big-enough-to-open-in-summer/not-good-enough-for-Oscar-contention season and go see a movie you’d have to be some kind of reserved, antisocial, misanthropic nut not to see in theatres. Review’ll be up next Saturday.

The cross-generationally appealing Peanuts Movie is also opening, and unlike other animated revivals like, oh, say, Smurfs or Alvin and the Chipmunks, you probably won’t leave the theatre having lost all faith in mankind, life, and existence after having seen it. And if you’re in a really weird mood, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is showing at a few theatres as well, so if you suddenly find yourself in an ‘80s nostalgia state of mind, but only on Saturday and only at eleven in the morning, you could go see that.
