This Weekend’s Box Office Predictions

  1. The Martian
  2. Hotel Transylvania 2
  3. Sicario
  4. The Intern
  5. Everest

What You Should See

The Martian’s an easy pick for number one movie of the weekend and a movie that’s actually worth seeing, so that’s an easy pick. Sicario’s another strong choice, but be prepared for a certain human darkness to potentially take over the narrative of your weekend if you go see it. If you have a sensitive stomach, The Walk might not be the best choice, but for everyone else that can get to one of the IMAX theatres that’s playing it this weekend, that’s another good choice.

Smaller movies opening at the Garneau this weekend include Guidance, which (despite its Canadian-produced origins) might be worthwhile, and Puli, which, to be honest, is hard to say much about definitively even after watching the trailer.

Also, you can see The Iron Giant: Signature Edition, Brad Bird’s directorial debut from way back in 1999, at South Edmonton Common on Sunday and Monday. Bird’s Tomorrowland may not have turned out quite right, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take advantage of this limited rerelease.
